Importance of a good logo.

Behind every great business is a great logo. A logo says a lot about the company it represents, after all it is usually the first image their customers are presented with, setting not only the tone of the company but also their professionalism and whether they should be taken seriously. Some would argue that the most important piece of company imagery is their logo, as it provides a face for the customers to remember, similarly to when you recognize a person you can instantly recognize a logo.

  •    A face for your company
  •    Essential for company image
  •    Stand out from your competitors

Company image.

When creating a logo, the company’s image has to be considered whether it exist yet or not. When a company has not yet created their image it is important to decide on what they wish it to portray to the target audience. For example if the company is service based then their friendly nature must come forward perhaps through soft shapes and fonts. A technological business may have a sharper and simpler design to show that they are a “cutting edge” company.  Below are a few examples of logos with the type of company they are you can see how the imagery effects the feel of the company.

Logo Types.
  1. Symbol/Icon.
  2.  Word Mark.
  3.  Letter Mark.
  4. Combination Mark.
  5.  Emblem

(1) Symbol/Icon.
Symbols and icons are an image usually something simple to allow customers to quickly recognize the company it represents. Complex symbols tend to be harder to remember therefor less effective. Though it doesn’t stop the logo being reworked as more complex for certain advertising campaigns, making it versatile.

(2) Word mark.
A Word mark is possibly the simplest of Logo concepts it is comprised entirely of text. This allows various choices of fonts and arrangements. Similarly to the shapes discussed before, it is clear that the font personifies the company it represents, making it look cold and efficient or warm and friendly either way word marks are great as a simple efficient logo.

(3) Letter mark.

Letter marks are another form of text-based logo. They tend to be simpler than word marks and sometimes used as a simplified version, using the same design concept. Letter marks are often the initials of the company. Looking at the letters as if they were shapes rather than text, when combining this with other shapes can make something unique and memorable.

(4) Combination Mark.

A combination mark is a mixture of iconography and text, bringing together imagery and lettering to make a single logo. Merging these to allows much freedom and can portray a more complete picture of the company. Create a logo using both symbols and text often allows it to be broken down into one or the other giving freedom of usage for example the symbol may stand better on its own when at a smaller size.

(5) Emblem.

Finally an emblem is similar to the combination mark, although the major difference is that the emblem is a single design. The text is incorporated within the design allowing text to visually read as shapes warping and reshaping the lettering to become suit and create the logo.
